Serena Williams, Healthy Now, Returns to US Open
Serena Williams is one of the most feared and fit players on the tennis court today. It is great to see her again at the US Open, especially since just months ago following complications from a foot injury, she underwent emergency treatment for a pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in the lung).
In 90 percent of cases, PE is caused by a blood clot in the deep veins of the leg that travels through the body and into the lungs, where it can block an artery, a condition known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). At least 100,000 cases of PE occur in the United States each year, according to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute. Urgent treatment is lifesaving: If PE is left untreated, about 30 percent of people will die.
At age 29, Serena wouldn’t normally be someone you’d think would be at target for a blood clot. But her constant travel schedule and foot surgeries put her at risk.
No matter what your age, you should always consider preventive products that can help you stay healthy. Compression products such as Microfiber Travel Socks and Sport Socks, offer mild to moderate graduated support to the lower extremeties. Wearing these types of products are a simple step with tremendous benefits.
